Welcome Back Message For The 2017/2018 School Year!

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

Welcome back to the 2017/2018 school year!  I am excited to start another amazing year of learning with you.  This year we will continue to practice many of our “Royal” traditions, along with starting new and exciting ones.

New Staff

We have added two divisions and now have fourteen.  This, along with retirement and maternity leave, has resulted in us hiring many new staff members.  I’d like to welcome Ms. Jen Klantschi (grade 2/3 – Mrs. Johal’s maternity leave), Mrs. Carolyn Boschmann (New Kindergarten Division), Mrs. Renee Hegberg (New grade 4/5 division), Mrs. Kelly Bulat (Learning Commons – two days/week) and Mrs. Robin McRitchie (Educational Assistant).  We are still in the process of hiring a new Learning Assistance Teacher, Educational Assistance and Aboriginal Cultural Support Worker. I am excited to have all these great educators join us!  Please take some time to welcome them and introduce yourselves.

As mentioned above we are seeking a New Learning Assistance Teacher.  In July, Mr. Rollins announced his retirement after 26 years of service in the Abbotsford School District.  Mr. Rollins started his career at Clearbrook Junior in 1991.  In 1993, he moved to Rick Hansen where he spent 17 years.  In 2012, he moved to Prince Charles where he stayed until his retirement.  I would like to thank Mr. Rollins for his years of service and wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement.

New Curriculum

We will be implementing B.C.’s new curriculum. The new curriculum will help students learn by exploring their interests and passions. Whether it is computers, hockey or art, passion is a motivator and students can connect with their interests to excel in the classroom.  One part of the new curriculum will be student’s self-assessment of the Core Competencies (Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social). Students will be given ongoing opportunities for self-assessment and goal setting, which may happen during any point of the learning process.  Self-assessment will allow student to develop the ability to describe themselves as unique individuals in relation to the Core Competencies.  They will gain greater ownership of their learning when they can self-assess and describe who they are as learners, document their progress, and share their accomplishments in an ongoing and holistic manner.

Core Values

We will continue to focus on our core values each month in our school wide assemblies and in the classroom.  We will use these values to help students contribute positively to one’s family, community, society, and the environment; to resolve problems peacefully; to empathize with others and appreciate their perspectives; and to create and maintain healthy relationships.

·      Respect: Give It To Get It

·      Empathy: See Through The Eyes Of Another

·      Integrity: Doing What Is Right When No One Is Watching

·      Honesty: Telling The Truth

·      Excellence: Doing Your Best

Our number one priority is to ensure that everyone is safe.  Parents/Guardians can help us to ensure that all students are safe.  Please communicate with your child about where they will be dropped off and picked up each day from school.  This year we have additional students due to new divisions.  Therefore, parents will need to give themselves extra time to drop off and pick up their child(ren).  Please be patient during the first week as we settle into our routines.  Secondly, please remember that we are a closed campus and all visitors must enter at the main office and sign in.  All other entrances will remain locked throughout the day.   Finally, please make sure that you clearly communicate with your child’s teacher.   We have many options available for parents to communicate with staff at Prince Charles.  You may choose to get your information and communicate through our school app, website, email, phone calls, Facebook, and in person.

We look forward to having you join us this year!   We are lucky to have the best education system and people in the world.   Together let’s Engage our students, set high Expectations for them and cheer them on as they Excel.
