Empowering Students Through Literacy and Technology: How Technology is Shaping Our Success
As we approach the end of the first term, I am pleased to share the progress and achievements of Prince Charles Elementary School. One of our primary goals, aligned with the strategic plan of the Abbotsford School District, is to increase literacy rates among our students. This goal is crucial as literacy forms the foundation for all learning and future success.
Our approach to enhancing literacy is comprehensive and multifaceted, focusing on the five pillars of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Each of these pillars plays a vital role in developing our students' strong reading and writing skills.
Additionally, incorporating technology into our literacy instruction has been transformative. Tools like Google Translate and AI applications like Diffit, School AI, and Immersive Reader have enriched our teaching methods.
Sara, a Grade 4 student, shared, "Google Translate helps me understand the lesson, as I can translate it into Farsi. It makes learning fun."
These technologies provide personalized support, making learning more accessible and engaging for all students.
We have also introduced professional development sessions on using AI in education, led by Nelly Fargeon, a Digital Learning Helping Teacher from the Curriculum Department. Nelly's expertise has provided teachers with insights into how AI can be integrated into the classroom to support personalized learning, improve student outcomes, and embrace new technologies.
Grade 4/5 teacher Sara Pawliw states, "AI generates lesson activities that are engaging and informative while still differentiating for struggling learners."
Our efforts are reflected in the recent Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) results, where 87% of our Grade 4 students are On Track and Extending in literacy. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and the support of our parents and community.
As staff members continue introducing technology applications in the classroom, these transformative tools have enhanced literacy rates by making learning more accessible, engaging, and effective for all our Prince Charles Royals!
Seasons Greetings,
