Literacy & Numeracy Goals

At Prince Charles Elementary, literacy remains a central focus of our school goals.
In the image shown, Mrs. Henry is engaging students through our One School, One Book initiative by reading How to Train Your Dragon. This shared reading experience brought our entire school community together around a common text, fostering meaningful connections across grade levels.

To further enrich this experience, Mrs. Bulat transformed our Learning Commons into a “Dragon Nursery,” creating an imaginative and welcoming space that brought the story to life and inspired curiosity and excitement around reading. This creative environment encouraged students to engage more deeply with the text while strengthening collaboration between older and younger learners.

Initiatives such as One School, One Book support the development of strong foundational reading skills, build student confidence, and promote a lifelong love of literacy from an early age. Through shared storytelling, creative learning spaces, and cross-grade collaboration, we continue to nurture a vibrant and inclusive literacy culture across our school community.

Math

At Prince Charles Elementary, numeracy is a key instructional focus across all grade levels.
We implement daily number talks from Kindergarten through Grade 5 to strengthen fact fluency and develop efficient mental math strategies. Each math lesson begins with a brief, purposeful number talk designed to promote mathematical reasoning, flexible thinking, and confidence with numbers.

Hands-on activities and the use of manipulatives are intentionally integrated throughout our classrooms to support number sense and deepen conceptual understanding through consistent, collaborative practice. As a result of this focused and intentional approach, 73% of our students are currently proficient or extending in numeracy, reflecting strong progress and a solid foundation for continued mathematical growth.
